When you’re out on the roadways, there are times when a dashboard symbol light inside the cabin may turn on. You might ask yourself what those dashboard symbols mean, or what you should do when they turn on. Lexus of Larchmont has put together this dashboard symbols guide to provide answers.
Brake Warning Light
The brake warning light looks like an exclamation point, surrounded by a circle. If this red light turns on, it’s best to have your vehicle looked at as soon as possible. It could be that the brake pads are worn down, which can cause the vehicle to have longer braking distances.
Schedule a brake inspection with us today at Lexus of Larchmont.
There may also be leaking or low brake fluid. Without brake fluid, you’ll be unable to brake the GX 460. Always check to make sure the emergency brake is deactivated before driving, because the brake warning light will remain on if the parking brake is on.
Coolant Light
Another red light, the coolant light lets you know that the engine’s temperature is higher than it should be. If you see a thermometer with two wavy lines underneath it, the coolant level is lower than where it should be. Pull over in a safe place and turn the car off to let it cool down. After it has cooled down (about 15 minutes), check the coolant level and add fluid if necessary.

Battery Light
If you see a dashboard symbol shaped like a battery with a plus and minus sign, it’s referring to the battery inside your vehicle. It may be time to replace the battery, but the alternator could also be faulty.
Once the car is off, open the hood and check around the battery terminals for any signs of corrosion or leakage. If you do see visible leakage around the battery, bring your Lexus GX 460 to our service team today.
Check Engine Light
This is a common dashboard light, shaped like an engine, that will turn on when there is an issue with… well, just about anything. It’s a general light that could be related to an emissions issue, loose gas cap, or potential electrical system concern. If the light turns on and remains solid, you may need to replace the spark plugs.
Tire Pressure Warning Light
If your tire pressure is low, you’ll see a light that looks like an exclamation point surrounded by tire treads. This yellow light will come on when tire pressure in at least one tire is low. Make sure to check all four tires and look at the pressure readings using a tire gauge.
You can find the proper pressure in your owner’s manual, or by checking the driver’s side door jamb area. If the light stays on even after filling up the tires with air, there may be debris stuck in the tire or a slow leak.
